8 Kings Bench Walk, Temple

[Wednesday] March 16th 1892

My dear Shorter

You forgot to enclose Spielmann's article. Please send it on.

I send you back the story rewritten and much improved. But I daresay you will like the story of the inundation better. I have written about half of it. You shall have it very soon, in a few days.

In the meantime look through the other story. I am sorry to give you the trouble of reading a story twice but it has been altered materially.

I also send you the rewritten Vain Fortune. I am highly pleased with it. This sounds fatuous but much should be forgiven a man who has written a book three times. I should like to hear how it strikes you.

I had an offer to write an article on Whistler from Black and White which I have declined. I declined because it seems likely that I shall write for you from time to time.

There was a mistake in the cheque I received for the Maupassant article. You said you would pay me three guineas a column — the article was nearly two columns and the cheque was for three guineas or three pounds, I forget which. This is a small matter but small matters sometimes deserve to be mentioned.

Yours truly

George Moore

PS Please not to trouble about the Maupassant article. It does not in the least matter. I mentioned it so that I might know at what rate my contributions were paid.
