[ornament] George Moore: A Communication to my friends [ornament]

Contents

The “Note” on page [5] by C.D. Medley, GM’s literary executor, relates, “When arrangements were made for the completion of the uniform edition of his works, George Moore proposed to write a general introduction to be published with ‘A Mummer’s Wife’ which he had designated as volume I. As the writing of this introduction progressed the work grew under his hand, his interest and his enthusiasm increased… so that he foresaw a separate publication… of what he had at first only intended as an introduction to the uniform edition. [At the time] of his death… [he had] written only one half of what he had in mind and a third of that [from p 64 on] had not been revised.”

Bibliographical Comment

In accordance with GM’s intention, A Communication to My Friends was used as the introduction to the Heinemann Uniform Edition and was printed with A Mummer’s Wife (A6-4c), the earliest of his writings to appear in that edition.

The title was previously used by Richard Wagner, a fact that could hardly have escaped GM, a great admirer of the German composer.
