Autograph letter signed, University of Kansas, 263 words

[Edited for paragraph breaks, capitalization, spelling and punctuation.]

92 Victoria Street

Thursday [19 January 1899]

Dear Lena,

Those who write nearly as well as Turgueneff should not begin their letters "I have no doubt in my mind but that the suppression” etc. The “but” is a redundancy I beg leave to remark, and it shocked me in a writer of your attainments.

I am much obliged for your advice which I will follow — I am disappointed that you said nothing about the other passages. Can you not find half an hour to glance through them? — they are all pasted in so the book opens naturally at the places. Will you send me the sentences which you think the chapter should begin with? — I have not got them — I did not take a copy, and it will be easier for you to copy them from my letter than for me to try to recall them.

What day next week will you dine here? I want to ask J M Barrie and his wife — They are such nice people and his book Margaret Ogilvy is a delicious masterpiece. Drop me a line saying what day will suit you for I want to write to ask them.

I have not sent you your MSS. If I do, you will waste time correcting it — You had much better go on. You will be able to correct it much better when you have finished the story.

As ever dear Lena

Yours

George Moore
