Printed May 1931 in an edition of 500 copies. Nancy Cunard tells something of its printing in GM: Memories of George Moore (B26), but says this “plaquette... never saw its public," as it was withdrawn due to a misunderstanding between her and GM about his signing the copies, which he refused to do. Some copies, however, must have been issued commercially as it is noted in the English Catalogue at 3s, January ’32, with Simpkin Marshall listed as publisher or distributor.

Previously unpublished, but what may be an earlier text, with three differences in wording, was published as “The Dream” in a publisher’s advertising periodical, Books From the House of Alexander Ousley, No. 1, December 1931. In a letter, quoted in the same issue, GM refers to this “prose poem” as “The Poet and the Pine.”
