8 Kings Bench Walk, Temple

Saturday [28 September 1889]

Dear Clara Lanza

I beg to inform you that you missed the mail notwithstanding the frantic haste you speak of in your letter enclosing agreement; I received it yesterday.

I hope you have received the two acts of the play I sent. They both seem to me to be concise and dramatic. They interest me and I should like to write the third and fourth acts, and will if you can arrange matters. Seriously, I do not think the play could fall flat although it might not run an infinite number of nights. I think the originality of the setting would interest and the religious element would excite a deal of comment.

Mike Fletcher was published a few days ago. Frank Harris says it is not nearly so good as A Mummer's Wife. It is very disappointing to hear this. He says it is full of good things but it is nevertheless unsatisfactory.

My next book will be more human; I shall bathe myself in the simplest and most naive emotions, and shall not leave them  — the daily bread of humanity.

This morning I received a letter from Heron-Allen asking me to dine with him on Tuesday to meet Edgar Saltus.

I intend to write about your book and am a little puzzled, first, if you would like me to tell the story of our friendship in the article, secondly, whether it would be advisable to do so. Told as I am minded to tell it, that is to say truthfully, I think it would be interesting and would give a character to the article.

Most sincerely yours

George Moore
