1900-08-01 to William Butler Yeats

Autograph letter signed, New York Public Library, 154 words

[Edited for paragraph breaks, capitalization, spelling and punctuation.]

Wednesday [1 August 1900]

My dear Yeats

I have been through the act and approve of nearly all your corrections. I approve of the passage you propose to write into the beginning of the act and shall like it better if you omit or lay little stress on the oath. You will not make the oath more impressive by speaking of it. The oath of fealty to the chief began 5000 years before Grania and to lay stress on it is like laying stress on the fact that a man must eat to live. You will only distract the attention of the audience from important matters — It will be an irritation. You had better have it out. It comes in its place at the end of the act.

Always yours

George Moore
