NOTE: In my narrative of Héloïse and Abélard it is related
that Héloïse wrote a story in French prose entitled Peronnik
the Fool so that she might teach her son French (he had
been away in Brittany for a long time and come back to her
speaking Breton). But the story, had it been included in
the published book, would have distracted the reader’s at-
tention from Héloïse's own story. It may be that in some
future edition of Héloïse and Abélard the story will be in-
cluded. — G.M.

This same note was appended to the story when it was published in the Dial with the final sentence continuing, “but it will be easier for me to make up my mind if it would be wise to do this after reading Peronnik the Fool in print, and it is for this reason that I now offer it to the public through the medium of a review.”
Contents
“Introduction,” “Proemial,” and The Pastoral Loves of Daphnis and Chloe are the same as A49-a, with minor textual differences, having been set from page proofs of that edition, prior to last-minute corrections; “Peronnik the Fool,” previously published in the Dial, November 1921. The story is an old Breton legend and can be found in Sonvestre’s Foyer Breton. Other versions of the story in English have appeared as “Peronnik the Jester,” “Silly Peter,” etc.
Although “Peronnik” is misspelled on the spine label, title page, and copyright notice, it is correctly spelled in text.

Further details regarding the printing of this edition can be found (pp 175-80) in GM: Memories of George Moore (B26), by Nancy Cunard, and in “The Hours Press,” also by Miss Cunard, in The Book Collector, Winter 1964. In both, however, her memory apparently played her false, as she lists the price of the volume at £2, but in the original prospectus of The Hours Press it says, “PERONNIK THE FOOL… Price 2 guineas Ready at Christmas.”

Published November 1933 at 84/- in an edition of 525 copies; distributed in the U.S. by Lippincott at $25 and possibly several copies were specially bound for presentation. At least one of these copies (“Number 1”) is bound in green leather, with the tail-piece (the crowing cock) reproduced on the front cover in gilt and with a water color and publisher's name
painted by Gooden on the front binder's leaves. This copy was seen in 1978 by Clinton K. Krauss at Charles J. Sawyer Booksellers in London, and one of the firm's representatives told him that “several copies" had been prepared in this fashion, although this seems unlikely.
