Contribution by GM

An account in his own words of his suggestion to Gosse for the writing of Father and Son, pp 308-10. Among the illustrations is a photograph of GM, Gosse and Haddon Chambers “In William Heinemann’s Garden at Ockham, 1919” facing p 424 and a caricature, “Presentation of the Bust,” by Max Beerbohm, which includes GM among its subjects, facing p 444.

Samuel C. Chew in A Literary History of England (New York: Appleton-Century-Crofts, 1948, p. 1604), says that Gosse "was aided in its composition by George Moore," but Charles Burkhart in "George Moore and Father and Son" in Nineteenth-Century Fiction, June 1960, demonstrates, by quotations from GM's letters to Gosse, "that Moore's share in the writing … was limited to very active encouragement and to generally unheeded advice."
