Autograph letter signed, National Library of Ireland, 177 words

The Green, Southwick, near Brighton
[September 1886]
My dear Julian
I am glad to find you minded to take life seriously. There is a pretty stiff exam for a consulship — International law etc. — you will be expected to write at least one language correctly. Can you do this? Drop me a line by return of post and I will do the best I can.
Of course what you say about Lady Ardilaun being ashamed that I [her] relations are brewers is all nonsense, silly Dublin scandal. I know Lady Ardilaun very well indeed and I know she is above such folly. I am sorry that such folly is attributed to her, but what can be expected but dirt from Dublin.
My last article on Ireland is descriptive of a visit to Ashford — I crack the Ardilauns up to the skies — my translator says it is the best article of the lot.
Yours affect
George Moore
